If you want good fantasy, I direct you towards Susanna Clarke, Neil Gaiman and also some of Charlie Stross' shorter fiction- try the concrete jungle. It's not exactly fantasy, but it's good. Tolkein was groundbreaking. His characters do have a rather stilted way of speaking which I find amusing. And Robert Jordan and his ilk have destroyed the genre. DAMN YOU TERRY GOODKIND!!!!
