Ok, four movies I have watched recently.
The Squid and the Whale
Joe (winner!) recommended this to me, saying that he though I'd really like it. And suprise, suprise, I did.
It's the story of a family that goes through a divorce and it's a character driven, sad movie. Most of it is quite depressing, but the characters are amazing- flawed and so very real. Apparently flawed characters is a Wes Anderson thing. But anyway, it has the two parents, their teenage son and their... 11 year old son, I think. And amdist great custody shuffling the kids kind of have to blunder through themselves. It's quite heartbreaking, but it has an ending which is unhappy yet hopeful.
It's really, really good. You'll fall in love with the characters.

Speaking of Joe Day, I learned today that he's quite a staunch Republican. Apparently his father is from the South. I suspect, though that he's got libertarian leanings. At least, I hope so.
Excuse me while I apply the compensatory model of decision making.

Match Point
The tagline for this movie was: Passion Temptation Obsession. It reminded me a bit of Closer in that it followed the sexual dynamic of two couples, but in this one the cheating was more one-sided. Basically Jonathan Rhys-Meyers' character meets and gets together with this sweet, wealthy girl, but then has an affair with  Scarlett Johanssen's character. The movie explores the consequences and whatnot. At times it's really slow and a bit dull, and other times it moves really, really quickly. It's an interesting movie- not amazing, but quite good, and the ending will make you cheer in a very morbid way.
It also has Jonathan Rhys-Meyers and Scarlett Johanssen being hot (and having sex! with each other!) and they're good eye candy. So. Good but not amazing movie, with very variable pacing.

Mission: Impossible III
Suprisingly enjoyable. I think the trick to Mission:Impossible is realising that they are actually romantic comedies in disguise. Well, in that they are funny, feature relationship angst and end happily. But you know, with more guns and explosions. So I guess you could call them romantic comedies that testosterone-high males can enjoy without feeling guilty.
One minor point. Ethan Hunt mentions in this movie that he works for the IMF. Now, being the massive MUN geek that I am, I have seriously been convinced for the last five or six years that Ethan Hunt works for the International Monetary Fund. And you know, it was always a big mystery to me what kind of backstory had been in place to make it such a powerful organisation. But in this movie, Ethan Hunt tells his wife that the IMF stands for the "Impossible Mission Force."
That broke my heart, just a little.

Velvet Goldmine
Wow. I've been wanting to watch this movie for the LONGEST time. I'm really glad I finally got to. It's kind of an odd movie.
Basically, it's about sex, drugs and glam rock. It can also be seen as one big bisexual orgy, though that would be kind of defeating the point of the film. If I had to describe it in one word it would be "pretty"- between Jonathan Rhys-Meyers (Brian Slade), Ewan McGregor (Curt Wild), Christian Bale (Arthur Stuart) and Toni Collete (Mandy Slade) you have pretty much enough eye-candy to last you a while. I'm a sucker for doomed love, so the great, insane love between Brian Slade and Curt wild had me squeeing quite madly. It kind of doesn't make sense at the ending, and the plot is questionable... but the soundtrack is good!
And of course, the slashiness. And the hot men naked. I would say, honestly, don't watch it if you're prudish or homophobic or incredibly interested in a plot that makes perfect sense. But if you want general prettiness, glamour and hot boys running around (and screwing each other!) this is the movie for you.
But make sure your parents aren't around, because take it from me, explaining Ewan McGregor's full frontal nudity is not fun. :)

By the way, stop with the interview requests. They're hard. :P
