Interview Meme
May. 8th, 2006 12:38 pmSo, this is that interview meme thing. And
lunaedraconis is interviewing me. If you want, you can ask to be interviewed in the comments! And I will ask you five personal/ridiculous/serious questions and you will have to answer them in your journal. Hurray.
1) What will you major in at MIT? Was it possible that I met you at CPW/were you there?
Well the original plan was Aero/Astro, but I'm considering Mechanical Engineering, too. I'm not sure I want to specialise that much at an undergraduate level. Actually, considering my total lack of knowlege in things mechanical, I might change that plan, too, but right now it sounds interesting. And I do like the cars and planes, even if I know very little about them. I'm also considering a double major with Literature. I know I'm going to minor in it, to keep me from going insane, but I may go all the way and major in it. Actually, literature is my first love and I would probably be very happy studying English at a liberal arts school somewhere and becoming a literary critic or some such but (1) it doesn't pay much and (2) I just didn't end up going down that route.
You couldn't have met me at CPW because sadly, I did not attend.
2) What happened to make you not buy into the whole Muslim thing?
Well, it's a number of things. I'm the kind of person who's drawn to extremes but incapable of sustaining them- at one point, I like the idea of being really religious and I decided to go to Islamiat classes with a friend of my Mothers. These days I like the idea of being incredibly knowlegeable/geeky, which is where my boundless enthuisiam for my major comes in. Though I do think I could do the literary geek thing if I tried.
But I digress. Anyway, shortly after these classes this boy I had a crush on asked me the "Do you believe in God?" question. I said yes, but that was the first time that I realised that atheism was actually an option, not just something that strange Swiss people did and I tried to explain away. Being about twelve years old it didn't take me very long to espouse the shiny new ideology. It's kind of embarassing that one of the biggest decisions in my life was made because of a hero-worship sort of crush, but the boy in question has since grown up and is very flattered by the whole thing.
I stopped being an atheist around eighth grade, went through some awful things involving agnosticism, Ayn Rand and then a misunderstanding of existentialism before returning to an unaffected sort of atheism. Right now I generally dislike organised religion on principle, tolerate faith and consider myself to be an agnostic atheist; that is to say I don't believe in a God, but I'm willing to change that belief if offered evidence. Nowadays I treat agnosticism as an approach to life and let it govern my knowledge, but not my beliefs and gut feelings.
3) Where, exactly, do you live? I know it's Indonesia/Malaysia/Singaporeish in that area of the world, but I'm not quite sure!
I live in Manila, Philippines.
4) What's your favourite author and book, besides Neil Gaiman and Good Omens (I'm excepting those because you iconed the best lines in it)?
Hm... it changes. Here's a list. But right now, I am absolutely in love with Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett. As far as authors go, I tend to like Neal Stephenson a lot, too.
They are very good lines, aren't they? Good Omens is probably the coolest fandom I'm a member of, however peripherally.
5) What do you want to tell me, personally, that you think I ought to know about you?
I have very little tolerance for incompetance and stupidity. I'm very much like my younger brother (
wr0m -one of the coolest people ever) this way. Nothing bothers me more than not being able to understand something. Actually, if we lived in an alternate universe where we had Asimovian computers to keep it from being abused, I'd probably wholeheartedly support eugenics.
Edit: Ok, these will take me a while to get through, so no more requests! :)
